Breaking Free from Idols and Living for God’s Glory

If your heart’s an idol factory, what do you do when the conveyor belt won’t stop?

Paul answers that in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whatever you do—whether you eat or drink—do all to the glory of God.”That’s the key. Don’t just stop worshipping false gods—start living for the glory of the true One.

Step one? Recognise your idols. The questions we asked in the last post—what do you fear, long for, or sacrifice for—help diagnose what’s truly sitting on the throne of your heart.

Step two? Repent and break them. In the Old Testament, idol-breakers smashed altars and burned false gods. Today, it might look like canceling a subscription, ending a toxic relationship, or changing a habit. But more than anything, it’s a spiritual shift: naming the idol, confessing its grip, and turning from it.

Step three? Replace your idol with Jesus. You are made to worship. If you don’t worship Jesus, you’ll always swap one idol for another. That’s why self-help never works long-term—it treats symptoms, not the heart. Only Jesus can satisfy your soul and rightly order your desires.

Step four? Rejoice and enjoy life rightly. Christian freedom isn’t about guilt-trips or grim discipline. It’s about being liberated to enjoy creation without being enslaved by it. You can love your work without making it your worth. You can eat a good meal without worshipping food. You can enjoy your spouse without placing the weight of your salvation on them.

When Jesus is at the centre, everything else falls into its rightful place. Let your life be one of worship—not to false saviours, but to the One who gave Himself to save you.

What idol needs smashing today?
