“Proven and Promised: Evidence for the Resurrection”
The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christianity, but how can we be sure it’s true? Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15, answers this question with compelling evidence. He doesn’t ask us to take it on blind faith; instead, he presents a case grounded in eyewitness testimony, scriptural fulfillment, and personal transformation.
Paul first points to the scriptural evidence, mentioning that it is ‘according to the scriptures’. No doubt he had in mind portions of the Old Testament, from Genesis to Isaiah to Psalms, that foretold Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection. These prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus’ life and death, making the resurrection an event rooted in divine plan and purpose.
Then, there is the eyewitness evidence. Jesus appeared to over 500 people after His resurrection, and Paul urges us to ‘ask’ these witnesses. Their testimony was public, verifiable, and impossible to dismiss. Jesus wasn’t hiding—He was alive and visible to many, and their accounts would become foundational to the early Christian faith.
Finally, Paul shares the personal proof of his own radical transformation. Once a murderer of Christians, Paul became one of Christianity’s most fervent advocates after encountering the risen Christ. If Jesus can change a life like Paul’s, He can change anyone.
The resurrection is not a myth or legend—it’s a fact. It’s the foundation of our faith, and it promises victory over death for all who are in Christ.
