“Spiritual Gifts — God’s Design for the Church”

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Have you ever wondered what spiritual gifts are really all about? In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul writes that he doesn’t want the church to be ignorant about spiritual matters. That’s a good word for us today, because confusion still surrounds the topic.

At CCSH, we believe the gifts of the Holy Spirit are alive and active—given by God to build up His church and bring Him glory. Paul describes these gifts as supernatural abilities distributed by the Spirit to every believer for the common good (1 Cor 12:7). Whether it’s teaching, serving, prophecy, or even speaking in tongues, the gifts are designed to work together like parts of a body. Every gift has a purpose, and every believer has a role to play.

Importantly, spiritual gifts aren’t the same as natural talents. They’re empowered by the Spirit and intended to serve others, not ourselves. As Peter writes, “Use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace” (1 Pet 4:10). They are given to glorify God, as Peter also writes, “…If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Pet 4:11).

In the next post, we’ll explore how to properly use these gifts—especially in the church setting. But for now, remember this: the Holy Spirit has equipped you with what you need to serve and glorify God. Desire the gifts. Use them in love. And build up the body of Christ.
