Daily devotion – The danger of drifting!
Don’t Drift!
We are a nation that loves ocean life. Swimming and enjoying the beach has long been a beloved Australian pastime. But the ocean, for all its beauty, can also be one of the most dangerous places—with its strong waves, changing tides, and hidden rips.
I’ve often watched people unknowingly drift out to sea, seemingly unaware of the growing danger they face simply by going along with the current.
The book of Hebrews warns believers of a similar danger—not of drifting at the beach, but of drifting away from the love of God.
Hebrews 2:1–4
“Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?”
The writer uses the image of an anchor later in Hebrews to show how secure we can be in the promises of God. Yet more spiritual problems are caused by neglect than perhaps any other failure on our part.
We neglect God’s Word, prayer, fellowship with other believers (Hebrews 10:25), and other opportunities for spiritual growth. As a result—we start to drift.
Over 44 years of ministry, I have seen people—sometimes even whole families—drift, and eventually disappear back into the world from which Christ had saved them. But when we are truly anchored in Christ, our Anchor holds, because He does not move.
Too many Christians today take God’s Word for granted and neglect it. This neglect, both in public and in private, is often the root cause of spiritual drifting.
It’s easy to drift with the current—but it’s difficult to return against it.
Our salvation is a great salvation. It was purchased at a great cost. It brings great promises and great blessings.
How, then, can we neglect it?
When we teach our grandkids how to surf, we always begin by surveying the waves and pointing out the rips—warning them to stay clear of those hidden dangers.
Let’s do the same in our walk with God this week. Stay close to the shore. Stay anchored to Christ. And keep to the safe waters of walking daily with the Lord.
Heb 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,
