Daily devotion – Wise and foolish builders…

Built on the Rock
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” — 2 Timothy 3:16

Here in Australia, we are surrounded by a culture steeped in secularism, existentialism, humanism, relativism, pluralism, and hedonism. Among these, hedonism — the pursuit of pleasure as life’s ultimate goal — dominates. Our society often cries: “Do whatever feels good. Live for yourself. Chase your own happiness.” But this is the perfect recipe for a miserable, aimless, and empty life.

God’s Word, however, offers a radically different path — a path of meaning, peace, and joy. In Mark 10:21, Jesus says:
“One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”

Rather than self-indulgence, Jesus calls us to self-denial. Rather than chasing after personal pleasure, we are invited to pursue eternal treasure.

You were made by God to know Him, love Him, and live for Him. That is where your greatest joy will be found. The more we live for the glory of God and serve others, the more we discover the true “sweet spot” of life. Why? Because we were created to live that way.

Jesus told a parable about two builders (Matthew 7:24–27). One was wise and built his house on the rock — he heard and obeyed God’s Word. When the storms came, his house stood firm. The other was foolish and built on sand — his life collapsed under pressure because it lacked foundation. That’s the picture Jesus gave us of lives built either on truth or trends, on His Word or the world’s wisdom.

You and I must choose to build our lives on the solid rock of Scripture. It doesn’t shift. It doesn’t change with the times. Because God has revealed Himself in the Bible, we have an unshakable foundation to stand on.

“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” — Psalm 18:2

So today, in a culture obsessed with self, let’s stand apart — not in pride, but in faith. Let’s build on the Rock. Let’s live lives that endure, because they’re grounded in God’s eternal Word.
