Fragrance – The Character of True Gospel Ministry
Every life gives off a “spiritual scent.” Some are like the aroma of fresh bread — inviting, comforting, life-giving. Others, sadly, are like the stench of decay. In 2 Corinthians 2:14–3:18, Paul reminds us that true gospel ministry carries the fragrance of Christ.
First, it is Triumphant. Like a Roman victory procession, Christ leads us in His triumph — having conquered sin, death, Satan, and the world. To those who are being saved, the gospel is the aroma of life; to those who reject it, it is the smell of death.
Second, it is Accredited. Paul didn’t need letters of recommendation — the changed lives of the Corinthian believers were his credentials. The best proof of our faith is a life transformed by the Spirit, one that others can “read” as a living letter from God.
Third, it is Glorious. Paul contrasts the fading glory of the old covenant with the ever-increasing glory of the new. In Christ, the veil is removed, and we behold His glory, being transformed into His likeness by the Spirit.
How can we carry this fragrance?
Be Cleansed by Christ — only His forgiveness removes the stench of sin.
Be Worshippers — adoration of Jesus, like when Mary worshipped with the precious spikenard, leaves a sweet aroma.
Be in the Word — immersing ourselves in Scripture infuses us with His character.
Walk in Obedience — a life surrendered to God is a sweet-smelling aroma to Him.
History shows that one life lived this way can have a ripple effect — like Edward Kimball’s small act of sharing Christ that eventually influenced millions through Billy Graham’s ministry.
The question is: what scent does your life give off?
Join us this Sunday at 6.00 p.m. for our evening service as we open 2 Corinthians 2–3 and discover how to live as a fragrant witness for Christ in a world that desperately needs the good news.
