Daily devotion – Australia does not have the capacity to defend itself!
Sunday night, I happened to watch the program Spotlight on Channel 7. According to retired generals and expert senior defence personnel, if Australia were attacked by a hostile nation, our country could only resist for about twelve hours before we would be forced to plead for help from the United States. Australia’s current defences are weak, and much of the equipment we have ordered—such as missiles, armoured vehicles, ships and three nuclear submarines under the AUKUS agreement—are still many years away.
As Helen and I sat listening to this sobering report, we thanked God that we know He is ultimately in control and watching over us. Humanly speaking, we have no real defence against a power such as China if they ever sought to invade us. In reality, it is only the United States that stands between us and being consumed by hostile nations. Meanwhile, China, Russia, and North Korea are joining forces, with China recently flexing its military strength before the world in an intimidating military parade.
Each of the defence experts concluded that our world is closer now to a major global conflict than at any time since World War II. These are facts—but more than that, they are reminders that we are living in the Last Days just as Bible prophecy declares.
For those without Christ, this is terrifying. One can only bury their head in the sand for so long before reality breaks in. But for the believer, we remember the words of the psalmist:
“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” (Psalm 20:7)
Life will not continue as it always has. The Day of the Lord is near. Soon, the Rapture of the Church will take place, and then seven years of tribulation will fall upon this world. And with that there will be many wars!
Friend, today I ask you to consider your future and your hope. As Australians, we cannot claim, “We will be safe, we can defend ourselves,” because the truth is, we cannot. But there is safety and eternal security found in Jesus Christ.
Now is the time to seek His face. Come before Him with a repentant heart, ask His forgiveness, and place your life upon the solid Rock—Jesus Christ. Only then will you stand firm, no matter what comes.
