Daily devotion – How do I listen to God’s Word?

Hearing God’s Word

In Genesis 1, the creative God is called Elohim, a Hebrew name that emphasizes His majesty and power. Interestingly, Elohim is a plural noun consistently joined with singular verbs and adjectives—reminding us that there is One God in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Scripture affirms this truth:

The Father is Creator (Acts 4:24),

The Son is Creator (John 1:1–3),

The Holy Spirit is Creator (Psalm 104:30).

Elohim reveals His power by creating everything through His Word. Matter is not eternal; it began when God spoke it into existence.

But this raises a question: if God’s Word carries such power, why do some hear it and remain unchanged? Jesus gives the answer in the parable of the Sower and the Seed. There are four types of soil—representing four kinds of hearts. God’s Word is like living seed, but it only bears fruit in the soil that is soft, deep, and ready.

It is sobering to realize that in Jesus’ parable, three-fourths of the seed bore no fruit. That is why we not only pray for the pastor as he faithfully teaches the Word each week—we must also pray for ourselves, the hearers. May our hearts not be shallow, rocky, or choked by the cares of this world, but rich soil where God’s truth can take root and flourish.

This week, as we gather on Wednesday and Sunday, let us come before God with expectant hearts, ready to receive His Word deeply, so that fruit may grow in our lives.

Jesus warned us:

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 13:9)

“Take heed what you hear” (Mark 4:24)

“Take heed how you hear” (Luke 8:18)

The question is: How will you listen this week?
