Daily devotion – All that God has done!
Deuteronomy 8:1–6
“Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors. Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. Think about it: Just as a parent disciplines a child, the LORD your God disciplines you for your own good. So obey the commands of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and fearing him.”
As I prepare this week’s study on the Parables of Jesus, I’ve been reading through Luke’s Gospel—particularly the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost sons (for indeed, both sons were lost).
Throughout these parables, which I’ll be sharing Wednesday evening with our faithful prayer team, we see the wonder and majesty of God’s gracious and loving heart. Each story reveals His relentless pursuit of those who have wandered and His deep joy when the lost are found.
In Deuteronomy 8, Moses prepares the children of Israel to enter the Promised Land. He reminds them of all the Lord has done—how they should be deeply grateful for His wondrous care:
He personally led them—by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
He miraculously provided food—manna from heaven in the midst of the wilderness.
He preserved their clothing—their garments never wore out despite years of wandering through harsh terrain.
He even cared for their feet—they did not blister or swell during the long journey.
What a faithful God we serve! He attends to the smallest details of the lives of those who belong to Him. Like a loving Father, He disciplines us, not to harm us, but to keep us from straying and destroying ourselves through foolish living.
After recounting all God’s goodness, Moses then brings a clear call to action:
“So obey the commands of the LORD your God by walking in His ways and fearing Him.”
If you’ve ever wondered what God desires from you today and tomorrow, this verse says it plainly—walk in His ways and revere Him with all your heart.
I pray that you take time to remember His goodness, His faithfulness, and His unfailing love. Let your gratitude overflow into obedience, and may your life this week be a living expression of thanksgiving to the Lord your God.
