Daily devotion – Friends and mentors in God’s Word.

Learning from Our Biblical Mentors

I am once again amazed at the life of young Daniel and how his devotion to God continues to impact my life—more than 2,600 years later. Reading through Daniel chapter 2 in preparation for next Sunday, the Bible truly comes alive as I follow Daniel’s interaction with King Nebuchadnezzar.

What stands out is his wisdom and grace, though he was still so young, living in a foreign land and far from his family. Yet, his faith in God never wavered.

I’ve often spoken about my mentors in Scripture—Noah, Joshua, Daniel, Jeremiah, and Paul just to mention a few—but I want to emphasize again how the Bible provides us with mentors and examples to follow. There are times in life when we may not have godly friends or older spiritual leaders to turn to. In those moments, God’s Word becomes our greatest guide.

You can look to a biblical mentor who faced similar challenges to your own, or one whose character and faith inspire you to walk closer with God.

I’ve learned much from Solomon too—his writings in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes remind us of the futility of chasing fulfillment apart from God. These books point us back to what truly matters: living in reverent obedience to our Creator.

And when I read the pastoral epistles, I don’t just see Paul writing to young Timothy—I receive those words as if they were written directly to me.

The Apostle Paul said:

“Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.”
— Philippians 3:17

May you find fresh encouragement today through a friendship with a mentor from the Bible. I look forward to the day when I will meet Noah, Joshua, Daniel, and Jeremiah face-to-face. I’ll have much to thank them for—and even more to talk about!
