Daily devotion – Heartburn

Pastor Keith   -

Luke 24:30–32
“Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, ‘Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?’”

After Christ’s resurrection from the grave, He appeared to two despondent disciples walking along the road to Emmaus. Their hopes were dashed, their hearts heavy — but then Jesus drew near. But He was unknown for this time to the disciples – verse 16

As they journeyed together, Jesus gave them the greatest Bible study ever heard! “Beginning with Moses and all the prophets,” He explained to them everything in the Scriptures concerning Himself — the promised Messiah.

He showed them that the Messiah was:

The Seed of the Woman whose heel was bruised.

The Blessing of Abraham to all nations.

The High Priest after the order of Melchizedek.

The Man who wrestled with Jacob.

The Lion of the Tribe of Judah.

The Voice from the burning bush.

The Passover Lamb.

The Prophet greater than Moses.

The Captain of the Lord’s army to Joshua.

The ultimate Kinsman-Redeemer in Ruth.

The Son of David — a King greater than David.

The suffering Savior of Psalm 22.

The Good Shepherd of Psalm 23.

The Wisdom of Proverbs and the Lover in the Song of Solomon.

The suffering Servant of Isaiah 53.

The Princely Messiah of Daniel, whose Kingdom will never end.

When was the last time your heart burned within you as you heard the Word of God?

When they reached Emmaus, the two invited Jesus to join them for supper — still unaware of who He truly was. As He broke the bread and blessed it, their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. Then, suddenly, He vanished from their sight.

The more you receive God’s Word, the more you will desire fellowship with the God of the Word. His truth ignites a fire that no circumstance can extinguish.

Even when we don’t realize it, Jesus is at work through His Word — stirring, warming, transforming our hearts.

Neither disciple knew that the other’s heart had been burning until Jesus was gone. Then, they shared a fellowship of flaming hearts. One reason Jesus disappeared was so they would turn to one another — to love, encourage, and minister together.

May your heart burn within you this week as you open God’s Word and as we gather together to study it — both Sunday and Wednesday!

“How sweet are Your words to my taste, Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” — Psalm 119:1
