Daily devotion – Standing on the Truth of God’s Word amidst shifting sands.
In our rapidly changing world, it’s easy to feel unsettled by shifting values and definitions. From the reimagining of family and identity, to debates about life’s sanctity and the rise of new ideologies, the landscape around us can seem almost unrecognisable compared to just a few generations ago.
Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to anchor ourselves not in the ever-changing tides of culture, but in the eternal truth of God’s Word. The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, “They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshipped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise!” (Romans 1:25).
This passage reminds us that throughout history, humanity has often turned from the Creator to worship creation—whether through ancient idols or modern movements. Today, we see passionate devotion to causes like climate change, sometimes elevated to the level of religious fervour. While caring for the earth is good stewardship, our ultimate allegiance must remain with God, not the things He has made.
We also witness difficult issues such as euthanasia and abortion, which challenge our understanding of life’s value. In these moments, it’s vital to remember that every life is precious to God, and our compassion and convictions should reflect His love and justice.
The history of creation worship—even child sacrifice in ancient times—serves as a sobering reminder of what happens when society loses sight of the Creator. Today’s “high priests” may be celebrities or leaders, but the temptation remains the same: to replace God with lesser gods.
Lord, help us to stand firm in Your truth, the Bible, amidst the shifting sands of culture. May we worship You alone, honouring Your creation but never replacing You with it. Give us wisdom, compassion, and courage to reflect Your love in a world searching for meaning, in Jesus name, Amen.
