Daily devotion – Wise and foolish builders
Matthew 7:24–29
“The Wise and Foolish Builders”
In the closing words of His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives a striking parable of two men—both builders, both hearing His Word—but with two vastly different outcomes.
One man, Jesus said, was wise. He heard and did what Christ taught. He built his life on the rock—firm, unshakable, enduring. When the storms came, his house stood, because its foundation was strong.
The other man was foolish. He too heard Christ’s words but did nothing with them. He built on the sand—on human opinion, convenience, and self-will. When the storm came, his house fell—and great was its fall.
Jesus makes clear: the difference between the wise and the foolish is not in what they know or say, but in what they do with His Word.
“Whoever hears these sayings of Mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24
Our Lord’s message is urgent and sobering. It is possible to attend church, hear Scripture, and even claim His Name, yet build on sand. The test will come—life’s storms, and ultimately, God’s judgment—and only those founded on Christ will stand.
Let us be doers of the Word, and not hearers only (James 1:22).
Let our lives be built on obedience, not emotion; on faithfulness, not mere profession.
For “on Christ, the solid Rock, I stand—all other ground is sinking sand.”
Is your life built on hearing and doing God’s Word—or merely hearing? When the storms come, will your house stand?
