The Purpose Behind the Mirror

Why does God call us to self-examination (2 Cor 13:5)? Because He wants authenticity, not performance.

Paul uses two Greek words in verse 5 — peirazō (to test for genuineness) and dokimazō (to prove by experience). It’s as though God holds up a mirror and says, “Let’s see what’s really there.”

When we stop long enough to look honestly, we discover whether our faith is real or merely routine. It’s possible to sing the songs, attend the services, even serve in ministry, and still miss the heartbeat of knowing Christ.

Jesus warned of this in Matthew 7: “Many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ … and I will say, ‘I never knew you.’” Those words are sobering. Yet Paul’s challenge is merciful — “Take the test now.”

Ask yourself: Do I see Christ’s character forming in me? Do I grieve over sin or just manage it? Am I growing in love for God and His people?

Examination isn’t about finding reasons to despair but reasons to draw near. The mirror of God’s Word doesn’t just expose flaws — it points us to the grace that can change them.
