Daily devotion – Just the mention of His name – Jesus.
John 20:15–16
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
That fateful Resurrection Sunday morning was a moment Mary would cherish for eternity. Her heart was already broken, and returning to the Garden Tomb only to find it empty must have been shattering. But then Jesus called her by name.
There was something unmistakable in the way He said it—His tone, His warmth, His love. She knew His voice.
Acts 4:12 reminds us of another name filled with power and meaning:
“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
There is something precious when a believer speaks the name of Jesus. When Helen and I came to Christ in 1977, we still remember our first Sunday service. As the congregation spoke the name of Jesus, it sounded so different from anything we had ever heard before—rich with reverence and love.
How often His name is misused in the world, thrown out as a curse or an expletive. Yet when His children speak His name, it carries worship, gratitude, and affection. There is a resonance the world cannot imitate.
An old and cherished song captures this beautifully:
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there’s just something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there’s something about that name.
This Christmas, when ever and where ever we can, let us speak His name as only His redeemed children can—
with reverence, wonder, and love.
