Daily devotion – Who is watching?
Mark 15:39
“And when the centurion, which stood over against Him, saw that He so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this Man was the Son of God.”
Somebody is watching your walk with Christ. It may be your spouse, your children, a friend, or a work colleague. They are watching to see whether God is real—and whether He is real in your life. And they are watching continually.
It was in the Lord’s death that this Roman centurion found life. It was in the moment of the world’s greatest darkness that he finally saw the Light.
So often we cry out,
“Lord, if You loved me enough to die for me—if the veil was torn so I could come boldly to Your throne—then why am I now going through this trial, this tragedy, this pain?”
Because there are centurions watching on—and they will see His Light in your dark days.
If you desire to be used by God, there is no greater way than to walk through disappointment, difficulty, and suffering, so that those watching you might truly see the reality of Jesus Christ at work in your life—and come to know that He is indeed the Son of God.
People are rarely convinced of God’s reality when they see us sailing through easy times and prosperous days. Such seasons can stir envy or cynicism. But hearts are deeply touched when they see believers navigating adversity and trials while steadfastly trusting the Lord.
2 Corinthians 1:4
“Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
This centurion was not won while seated among the five thousand eating bread and fish in the sunlight—but while standing at the foot of the cross, witnessing Jesus in the darkness.
And there, he declared, “Truly this Man was the Son of God.”
