Daily devotion – When that day arrives.
Death Swallowed Up in Victory
There are moments in life that leave an indelible mark on our hearts — impressions that never fade. One of the deepest of these is the death of a loved one. Often we know the day is coming, yet when it finally arrives, the reality still strikes with overwhelming force. Tears flow, and memories come rushing in — laughter once shared, sorrows once carried together, and precious moments long stored away suddenly vivid again.
Yet for the believer, grief is never without hope.
When those we love have gone to be with the Lord, God’s comfort wraps around us like a warm covering. In the midst of sorrow, He grants a supernatural peace. Our thoughts turn heavenward — wondering what our loved one now sees, what joy fills their hearts, and whom they have already embraced in glory. The splendour of Heaven, the fullness of God’s love, and the reality of eternal life shine brighter than ever before. And within us rises a longing — not rooted in despair, but in the sure promise that one day we too will be with Christ.
The Gospel speaks most powerfully in such moments. On a dark morning when hearts were broken, death itself was defeated. When Jesus hung upon the cross at Calvary and rose again, He shattered the chains of the grave and proclaimed eternal life to all who would follow Him.
As Scripture declares in First Epistle to the Corinthians 15:54–57:
“Death is swallowed up in victory…
O death, where is your sting? …
Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
For the Christian, death is not the end of the story — it is the doorway into everlasting life. The sting of death has been removed, the victory secured, and the reunion promised.
So we grieve, but not without hope.
We mourn, but not without comfort.
We remember, but with the certainty that in Christ, goodbye is never forever.
The hope of us meeting again drives us to long for Christs return each new day!
