Daily devotion – Wasted suffering….
Waste Not the Lessons of Suffering
Judges 2:16–23
In the book of Book of Judges we see a tragic pattern repeated again and again in the life of Israel. The Lord would raise up judges who delivered His people from their enemies, yet the people would not listen. Instead, they turned quickly from the ways of their fathers and pursued other gods.
When oppression came and suffering increased, the people groaned under the weight of their distress. In His mercy, the Lord was moved with compassion and raised up a deliverer. For a time there was peace and blessing. Yet once the judge died, the people returned to their sin—often becoming more corrupt than before.
It was a heartbreaking cycle: sin, suffering, repentance, deliverance, and then back to sin again.
Suffering comes our way at some point in all our lives, and it is never invited. Yet in the case of Israel, their suffering often came because they had wandered far from the Lord. Their affliction was not meaningless; it was God’s loving chastening intended to turn their hearts back to Him.
Sadly, the great tragedy was that they wasted their suffering. They did not allow God to complete the deeper work in their hearts. Instead of learning and maturing, they returned to the very sins that had brought them into distress in the first place.
Believers today can fall into a similar pattern. When our hearts drift from the Lord and we begin to neglect His Word, we slowly begin to forsake the God of the Word. If the Lord allows hardship to enter our lives during such times, it is often His loving hand calling us back to Himself.
Therefore, if you ever find yourself in a season of suffering brought about by your own wandering or foolishness, do not waste that moment. Allow the Lord to search your heart, correct your path, and deepen your walk with Him.
Suffering, when surrendered to God, can become one of His greatest tools for spiritual growth. Let us learn the lesson well so that we do not need to repeat it again.
“For whom the Lord loves He chastens.” (Hebrews 12:6)
May we respond quickly to His correction, walk humbly before Him, and grow wiser through every trial He allows in our lives.
