The Miracle

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Some moments in Scripture stop you cold. Matthew 1:20 is one of them. Joseph is turning Mary’s pregnancy over and over in his mind — heartbroken, confused, trying to do the right thing — when an angel breaks in: “That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

This isn’t a creative cover story for an awkward situation. It’s a miracle. Pure, supernatural, impossible (unless God Himself is acting). The child will be called Jesus, “because He will save His people from their sins,” and Immanuel, “God with us.”

That double name is the heartbeat of the gospel. Jesus is fully human — born of Mary, sharing our hunger, weariness, sorrow, and temptation — so He can truly understand us. Yet He is fully divine — conceived by the Holy Spirit, without sin — so He can actually save us. No mere teacher or example could do both. Only the God-man can.

When life feels heavy and your struggles feel isolating, remember this: you are not crying out to a distant deity who only watches from above. You are speaking to Immanuel, who stepped into the very feelings you’re carrying right now. He knows exhaustion. He knows temptation. He knows what it is to feel misunderstood. And because He does, He invites you to come boldly to the throne of grace (Heb 4:15-16).

The virgin birth isn’t a side detail in the Christmas story; it’s the proof that God refused to stay far off. He came near enough to save you from the inside out.

Lord, thank You for the miracle of Your coming. When I feel alone in my weakness, remind me that You understand and You save. Draw me close today. Amen.
