Daily devotion – What I can’t go without!

A Habit We Can’t Go Without

You often hear people say, “I can’t go without my morning coffee,” or “I need my morning workout,” or “I have to get my walk in.” These routines have become essential parts of many lives.

But for King David—a man after God’s own heart—there was something far more important he could not go without: time with the Lord.

“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” (Psalm 5:3)

It’s interesting how habits change over time. Growing up in Australia, coffee wasn’t the daily necessity it is now—we were a nation of tea drinkers. Morning workouts are a relatively modern concept, and walking was once simply a means of getting somewhere, not an activity scheduled for fitness. People were active because life required it.

Yet something far more vital than all of these has quietly faded in many lives—meeting with God at the start of the day.

Prayer in the morning…
Before breakfast.
Before school.
Before work.
Before the noise of the day begins.

To give God your day.
To thank Him for His grace and mercy.
To acknowledge His provision.
To seek His guidance.
To ask for His protection over you and your family.

These are not optional extras—they are essentials. This is something we truly cannot go without.

Coffee, exercise, and daily routines are all habits we learn and then follow. In the same way, prayer is a habit—one that must be cultivated with intention.

David not only prayed in the morning, but continually throughout the day:

“Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.” (Psalm 55:17)

So here is a simple challenge for this week:

Tomorrow morning, before anything else, lift your voice to God.

Start a godly habit.
Follow in David’s footsteps.
Let your Heavenly Father hear from you early.
Direct your prayers to Him—and look up.
