Real Repentance Bears Fruit
John the Baptist didn’t soften his message for anyone. When the religious elite, the Pharisees and Sadducees, came to observe him, he called them a “brood of vipers” fleeing the coming judgment. He refused to let them hide behind their ancestry: “Do not think to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’”
John’s uncompromising call was simple and urgent: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” True repentance isn’t just feeling sorry – it’s a complete change of direction that produces visible fruit. John demanded evidence of transformed lives, not empty religious performance.
He warned that the axe was already at the root of the trees. Every tree that failed to bear good fruit would be cut down and thrown into the fire. Outward appearance, family heritage, or religious activity meant nothing without genuine heart change.
This message cuts close to home today. It’s easy to trust in church attendance, moral efforts, or a Christian upbringing while our hearts remain unchanged. John’s message 2000 years ago, asks each of us today: Is there real fruit in your life? Are love, joy, peace, patience, and the other fruit of the Spirit growing? Or are you producing only leaves — looking good on the outside but barren within?
The good news is that Jesus, the One John pointed to, baptises with the Holy Spirit and empowers us to live differently. He doesn’t leave us to manufacture fruit on our own.
Today, let the Holy Spirit search your heart. Where do you need fresh repentance? Confess honestly, turn fully, and ask Him to produce lasting fruit in you.
Lord, expose any areas where my life lacks real fruit and evidence of You in me. Give me genuine repentance that changes how I live. Fill me with Your Spirit so I can bear fruit that honours You. Amen.
