Daily devotion – When worries trouble your night.
Resting in God’s Peace
Psa 4:8
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”
Do you ever go to bed with a mind full of worries? So often the body is tired, yet the mind is restless—replaying conversations, anticipating problems, or carrying burdens we were never meant to hold alone.
King David knew this struggle well. As he penned Psalm 4, the pressures around him had not disappeared. There were conflicts, accusations, and uncertainty. Yet David understood something deeply practical: while he could not always control the battles around him, he could surrender the battle within him.
David begins with a simple but powerful prayer:
“Answer me when I call… have mercy on me and hear my prayer.”
He brings his trouble honestly before the Lord. No pretence, no polished words—just a heart crying out, “God, help me.”
But David doesn’t stop at asking—he believes.
“The LORD will hear when I call to Him.”
How often do we pray, yet carry on as though nothing will change? True prayer rests not only in speaking to God, but in trusting the character of God.
David also deals with his emotions rightly. Anger, frustration, and hurt are not ignored—but neither are they allowed to rule. He surrenders them before the Lord, choosing trust over turmoil. Instead of lying awake consumed by problems, he redirects his heart:
“Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.”
And then comes the beautiful exchange.
In the darkness, David receives light.
In sorrow, he finds gladness.
In turmoil, he is given peace.
Notice—his circumstances had not yet changed. But he had.
“You have put gladness in my heart…
In peace I will lie down and sleep.”
This is the quiet miracle of God’s presence. He may not immediately remove the storm, but He will steady the soul. He replaces anxiety with assurance, fear with faith, and restlessness with true rest.
Tonight, whatever may be weighing on your heart, follow David’s example:
Bring it honestly before the Lord.
Trust that He hears you.
Surrender your thoughts and emotions to Him.
And then—rest.
“For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”
God is not only the keeper of your life—He is the giver of your peace.
