You Are the Salt of the Earth

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Jesus didn’t say “You should try to be salt.” He declared, “You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13).

In the ancient world, salt was essential for preserving meat, enhancing flavour, purifying, and even making covenants. Jesus uses this everyday image to describe the influence His people are meant to have in the world.

As salt, we restrain moral decay in our communities. We permeate society with the gospel. We bring a purifying and refining presence. We add flavour and goodness to life. We create thirst for the Living Water. And yes, we resist and oppose sin.

The great danger is losing our saltiness. When we become too much like the world, we lose our distinctiveness and become useless — good only to be thrown out and trampled. We don’t lose our salvation, but we can lose our effectiveness.

God has placed you where you are to be salty — in your family, workplace, friendships, and nation. Your integrity, your words, your prayers, and your Christlike character all work together to preserve, flavour, and point people to Jesus.

Don’t withdraw. Don’t blend in. Stay distinct. Stay useful. Be the kind of Christian whose presence makes a difference — the kind that creates thirst for something more.

Lord, make me salty in a tasteless world. Preserve me from losing my distinctiveness. Use my life to restrain evil, bring flavour, and create thirst for You. Amen.
