Daily devotion – Hardened hearts that grow cold to neglect the Lord.

Exodus 8:15
“But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not heed them, as the LORD had said.”

Pharaoh repeatedly witnessed the power, mercy, and patience of God. Through each plague the Lord gave him opportunity after opportunity to repent, humble himself, and let the children of Israel go free. Yet instead of surrendering to God, Pharaoh continually hardened his heart.

When the plague of frogs overwhelmed Egypt, Pharaoh begged Moses to pray for him and promised he would obey the Lord. God answered the prayer exactly as requested and removed the plague. But the moment Pharaoh experienced relief, he broke his promise and turned away from God once again.

How often people can do the same today. In seasons of crisis many cry out to the Lord, asking for help, healing, or deliverance. Promises are made and hearts seem tender before God. Yet once the trial passes and life becomes easier again, many drift away and forget the Lord who showed them mercy.

The same sun that melts the ice also hardens the clay. God’s mercy softened the hearts of some, but Pharaoh resisted the truth until his heart became increasingly hard and calloused.

The Lord is still gracious and patient today. He continues to speak through His Word, through conviction, through answered prayer, and through the work of His Spirit. God’s desire is not that people perish, but that they come to repentance and know His salvation through Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 3:15 says:
“Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”

May we never become indifferent to the voice of God. Instead, let us remain humble, thankful, and quick to obey Him. Every day God gives us is another opportunity to walk closely with Him and respond to His grace.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your great patience and mercy toward us. Forgive us for the times we have ignored Your voice or taken Your grace for granted. Keep our hearts soft and sensitive to Your Spirit. Help us to trust You, obey You, and remain faithful even after the trials have passed. Strengthen us to walk closely with Jesus each day and to never drift away from Your truth. We also pray for loved ones who do not yet know You — may Your mercy and grace draw them to repentance and salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
