Daily devotion – Taste and see that the Lord is good!
The Goodness of God
Psalm 34:8 “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.”
We can easily become overwhelmed by the blanket of oppression that this world seeks to cover each one of us with when our focus is fixed solely on ourselves and the circumstances around us.
In doing so, we can miss, overlook, or simply fail to appreciate the abundance of goodness that belongs to those who are children of the one true God. Our glorious God saves (Psalm 34:4-6), He protects (v.7), and He satisfies (v.8).
The word “taste” used by the Psalmist does not mean to merely sip or take a small nibble. Rather, it speaks of feeding upon the Lord, drawing near to Him through His Word, and personally experiencing all that He has for us.
1 Peter 2:2-3
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
This tasting calls us to know our Lord more deeply and to enjoy Him more fully.
David discovered the sweetness of God’s Word firsthand:
Psalm 119:103
“How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
As David meditated upon God’s precious Word, he not only experienced its sweetness but also rejoiced in the goodness of the Lord.
Perhaps today everything you have touched seems to have fallen apart. Nothing appears to be going smoothly, and the pressures of life are weighing heavily upon you. Yet if you would step away for a moment from the clatter, dust, and distractions of everyday life, open God’s Word, and seek Him, He will refresh your soul. He will wash away the grime of this world, clear your spiritual vision, and help you see things from His perspective.
When that happens, change begins to come. Peace replaces anxiety. Rest settles where hurry once ruled. Hope rises where discouragement had taken hold.
Today, David’s invitation still stands:
“Taste and see that the LORD is good.”
2 Corinthians 4:18
“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
Take time today to feed upon God’s Word, meditate upon His promises, and remember His faithfulness. As you do, you will discover afresh that the Lord is indeed good, and blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
