The Lost Soul

Do you remember the story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well in John chapter 4? Jesus was alone, and He had purposely made His way to that location because He had a divine appointment with a particular woman. She had been ostracized by the other women of her community because of her immoral lifestyle. This is likely why she came to draw water at a time of day when the other women had already finished gathering their daily supply.

“He had to go through Samaria on the way.” (John 4:4)

John records:

“Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.'” (John 4:5-7)

This woman was lost and alone, searching for identity, purpose, and acceptance. Sadly, like many people today, she sought to fill the emptiness in her heart through relationships. Yet despite multiple relationships with men, she had found neither peace nor fulfillment. Instead, she carried the pain and disappointment of a broken life.

Jesus began to speak to her about a different kind of water:

“Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)

The woman responded eagerly:

“Please, sir, give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again.”

Then Jesus gently exposed the true condition of her heart:

“‘Go and get your husband,’ Jesus told her.

‘I don’t have a husband,’ the woman replied.

Jesus said, ‘You’re right! You don’t have a husband—for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now.'” (John 4:16-18)

Jesus saw beyond the mask she wore. He saw the hurts, failures, disappointments, and broken relationships that had marked her life. Yet He did not condemn her. Instead, He revealed Himself to her as the Messiah, the very One sent by God to save sinners.

Imagine that moment. This woman came to draw water from a well but encountered the One who is the source of Living Water. She met face-to-face with the God who created her, loved her, and knew everything about her.

That day, her life was forever changed. She left the well with far more than water. She left with forgiveness, hope, purpose, and a new relationship with God. No longer was she alone. No longer was she searching for meaning in all the wrong places. She had found eternal life in Jesus Christ.

The wonderful truth is that Jesus still seeks out lost souls today. He still meets with men and women who are broken, searching, and thirsty for something more. He alone can satisfy the deepest needs of the human heart and give lasting joy and peace.

Have you personally met with Christ? Have you received the Living Water that only He can give? Jesus desires for you to know Him, to walk with Him, and to discover the joy and purpose that can never be found apart from Him.

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)

Today, if you hear His voice, come to Him. He is still seeking the lost, and He is still changing lives forever.
