The Joy of Gathering
Acts 2:42-47
“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers…”
The joy that filled these early believers because of their salvation is evident in their desire to gather together continually. They did not see meeting with other Christians as an obligation, but as a privilege. Their hearts had been transformed by Christ, and they longed to worship Him alongside one another.
As they gathered, they sat under the teaching of the apostles—men who had walked with Jesus Himself. Imagine listening firsthand to those who had witnessed His miracles, heard His teaching, and seen Him risen from the dead. Imagine the questions they must have asked and the eagerness with which they received God’s Word.
They also loved to share meals together. In those days, eating together was a beautiful expression of genuine fellowship, love, and care for one another. They opened not only their homes but also their hearts. Around the table they encouraged one another, rejoiced in God’s goodness, and strengthened one another in the faith.
Prayer was central to their gatherings. With new believers being added to the church daily, there was much to thank God for. At the same time, opposition against the followers of Christ was growing, so they continually sought the Lord’s protection, wisdom, and strength. Their dependence upon God was evident.
As they spoke of God’s mighty works, reverence and holy awe filled their meetings. Their hearts were fully devoted to the Lord, and God was pleased to work powerfully among them through miracles and wonders that confirmed His Word.
No one was left to struggle alone. Whenever someone had a need, others willingly shared what they had. Their generosity flowed naturally from hearts that had first received God’s grace.
Although the church was rapidly growing, they remained united with a singleness of heart. Their common purpose was simple—they loved the Lord Jesus Christ above all else.
The pattern remains the same for us today. While the circumstances may differ, the priorities have not changed. May we have the same passion to gather with God’s people, the same hunger for His Word, the same commitment to prayer, the same love for one another, and the same desire to glorify Christ. As we do, our lives and our church here at CCSH will continue to bear a powerful witness to the world around us.
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)
