Daily devotion – Watching over sheep alongside David.
Alone With God
Psalm 23:1 — “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Psalm 23 is often referred to as the Shepherd’s Psalm. It is one of the most well-known passages of Scripture, loved not only by believers but also recognized by many outside the church.
David spent many years as a shepherd caring for his father’s sheep. Often he would find himself alone in the wilderness, watching over the flock, ensuring they were safe and well fed. There is something unique about being alone in the bush with no one but yourself, your thoughts, and the quietness of God’s creation. Away from the distractions and pressures of life, there is opportunity to reflect, meditate, and listen.
It was in such settings that God gave David many of the psalms. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, David would often attach music to these words and sing them aloud unto the Lord.
Take a few moments today to read through the entire Psalm. As you do, imagine young David sitting among his father’s sheep, meditating on the wonder and truth of these remarkable words that reveal God’s power, grace, faithfulness, and love.
Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of spending time alone with God:
Matthew 6:6 — “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”
Being alone with God, communicating with Him, enjoying His presence, and meditating on His Word is surely one of the greatest personal blessings of being a child of God. In those quiet moments our hearts are refreshed, our minds are renewed, and our faith is strengthened.
When was the last time you experienced such a moment?
Perhaps today would be a good day to find a quiet place, open your Bible, and spend some time alone with your Shepherd.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You desire fellowship with us. Help us to make time to be alone with You, away from the distractions of life. Teach us to hear Your voice through Your Word, to enjoy Your presence, and to trust Your leading as our Good Shepherd. Refresh our souls and draw us closer to You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
