Fast Humbly

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Fasting is a powerful spiritual discipline, but like giving and praying, it can easily become hypocritical. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus addresses how we should fast.

In His day, the Pharisees turned fasting into public theatre. They disfigured their faces and looked gloomy so everyone would notice how spiritual they were. Jesus says, “Do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.” Instead, He gives practical instruction: wash your face, anoint your head, and act normal. Don’t advertise your fasting.

True fasting is done unto God, not for show. It is a private act of humility, dependence, and seeking the Lord. The goal is not to appear spiritual to others, but to draw closer to the Father.

Once again, Jesus repeats the powerful phrase: “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” God notices every hidden act of devotion. He sees the quiet sacrifice, the unseen self-denial, and the humble seeking.

Fasting is not about earning God’s favour. It is about expressing our hunger for Him more than for food or comfort. It reminds us that we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

In a culture that celebrates self-promotion, Jesus calls us to humble, hidden devotion. Whether fasting from food, or other things, do it quietly before the Lord. Don’t broadcast it and let everyone know what you are doing.

Let your fasting be sincere and humble. The Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you openly in His perfect timing and way.

Lord, teach me to fast humbly before You. Purify my motives in every spiritual discipline. Help me seek Your face more than the approval of others. Amen.
