Reaching for the Hem
Matthew 9:20–22
For twelve years, a bleeding woman had lived on the outside of everything — outside the temple, outside polite company, outside touch itself, because her condition made her ceremonially unclean. She had spent everything she had on physicians and had nothing to show for it but a body that was still failing her.
She didn’t approach Jesus directly. She came from behind, in the middle of a crowd, and reached for the edge of His garment, believing that would be enough. It was a quiet, almost hidden act of faith from someone who had learned not to expect much.
Jesus stopped. He turned. And He called her “Daughter.” In this beautiful interaction, Jesus was restoring and healing everything years of illness and isolation had stripped away.
Some of us come to Jesus the same way she did: not boldly, not out loud, but reaching quietly from the edge of the crowd, half-believing it might be enough. This story says it is. Jesus doesn’t require a grand approach. He responds to genuine faith, however small or hidden it feels to the one offering it. It’s not so much the size of the faith that is important, it is the object of that faith – Jesus!
She had been reaching toward physicians for over a decade with nothing to show for it. One touch of Jesus’ hem did what twelve years of effort could not.
