Will Jesus Help Someone Who Feels Unclean?
Matthew 8:1–4
“Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” — Matthew 8:2–3
The first man Jesus encounters in Matthew 8 is carrying more than a disease. He is carrying shame, isolation, and rejection. Leprosy in the ancient world was a slow, visible, decades-long death and it came with total social and religious exclusion. Lepers were required to live apart, cry out “unclean” wherever they went, and were treated, in the words of the historian Josephus, “as if they were dead.”
Notice what the leper does not say. He doesn’t ask, “Can You heal me?” He has no doubt about Jesus’ power. His real question is, “Will You?” Will you use that power for someone like me?
Jesus answers with both a word and a touch. The word alone would have been enough for the very next miracle in this chapter is healed entirely from a distance. But Jesus reaches out and touches this man anyway. A man who may not have felt human contact in years. And here is the remarkable thing: according to Jewish law, touching a leper should have made Jesus unclean. Instead, the leper became clean. The direction of contagion was reversed.
This is the gospel in miniature. Jesus does not catch our uncleanness; He absorbs it and transforms it.
This miracle comes immediately after the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus laid out an impossibly high standard for Kingdom life. By the end of that sermon, every honest listener knows they cannot meet it. Spiritually, we are all leprous. And this is exactly what Jesus does with the spiritually leprous: He doesn’t recoil. He reaches out His hand and brings eternal healing.
Will Jesus help someone who feels unclean — ashamed of their past, carrying secret sin? His answer has never changed: I am willing. Be cleansed.
