The Power of Intercessory Prayer
2 Kings 5:1–4
“If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy.” — 2 Kings 5:3
One of my favourite stories in the Old Testament is the account of Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army, who was miraculously healed of his leprosy through the ministry of the prophet Elisha.
Yet the true hero of this story is found quietly in the background—a young Jewish slave girl who had been taken captive from Israel and was serving Naaman’s wife.
She had no position, no influence and apparently no ability to change Naaman’s circumstances. Yet she spoke just a few words: “If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria!”
Those simple words became the catalyst for Naaman’s journey to Israel, where he encountered the God of Israel and was healed.
What an encouragement this is concerning the power of prayer and faithful witness!
Last night, as we gathered for our prayer meeting at the chapel, we interceded for many needs—for our nation, our church, our families and those who are lost, suffering and in need of God’s touch.
Perhaps, like that young slave girl, we may sometimes feel that we are small in number and insignificant in influence. But never underestimate what God can do through the prayers of His people.
Our prayers may seem like only a few simple words spoken in a quiet room, but those prayers rise before the throne of Almighty God. God has chosen to work through the prayers of His people to accomplish His purposes and bring His power into the lives of others.
Perhaps today you are facing what seems to be an impossible situation. Naaman had a problem that no human power could solve. But God had already placed someone in his household who knew where he needed to turn.
The lesson is simple: take your impossible situation to the great God who created heaven and earth—and place it at His feet in prayer.
You may not see what God is doing. You may never know how your prayers have affected another person’s life. But keep praying. Keep interceding. Keep believing.
The young slave girl spoke a few words, and God used them to change Naaman’s life.
Never underestimate the power of a praying believer.
Bring your family, your church, your nation, your burdens and your impossible situations before the Lord today.
