The Unassuming Evangelists
Acts 1:8 — “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
Here at Calvary Chapel Secret Harbour, we have some amazing servants of God—people who faithfully serve the Lord in many wonderful ways. Over the years in ministry, I have had the privilege of serving alongside a number of quiet and unassuming people. When asked to pray, serve communion, usher, or take on some other ministry responsibility, they have often shared their perceived inadequacies with me: “I don’t know what to pray,” or “I’m not very eloquent with my words.”
Yet I have watched these same people pray the simplest, most heartfelt prayers. And such prayers are wonderful in the ears of the Lord and a tremendous encouragement to those listening.
I have also discovered that some of the most effective and diligent evangelists are found among these very people. Both men and women who are so enamoured with Christ and so sincere in their relationship with Him that they simply live out their faith every day, in every situation. It makes no difference whether they are at work, shopping, talking with a neighbour, or simply going about their daily business. They are ready to speak of Jesus, and God continually opens doors for them.
Strangers often find themselves sharing their hearts, their struggles and their troubles with these people. Why? Because there is something genuine about their lives. They are not trying to impress anyone or promote themselves. They simply love Jesus and love people.
Pastor Chuck Smith often reminded us as pastors that healthy sheep beget other sheep. In other words, believers who are devoted to Christ, His Word and the fellowship of believers are the ones God uses to reach lost souls.
It is not always through a massive crusade, a conference or a great public ministry. Often, it happens through someone quietly living for Jesus every single day. There is no self-promotion—just an authentic love for Christ and a genuine concern for the lost.
I recognise such people, and I stand in awe of their powerful lives—lives that perhaps only the Lord and those they have reached will ever fully know.
And when we finally stand in glory, I believe some of the most obscure and unrecognised servants of God will receive a tremendous reward in Heaven. There will be men and women rejoicing with them because someone faithfully shared Christ with them when nobody else was watching.
Matthew 20:16 — “So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.”
Zechariah 4:10 — “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin.”
So, continue to be an Andrew this week. Andrew may not have been the most prominent of the disciples, but he repeatedly brought people to Jesus. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you and open doors of ministry as you go about your ordinary day.
1 Corinthians 1:26–29 reminds us:
“For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise… and the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty… that no flesh should glory in His presence.”
Remember, it was just a shepherd boy who took down the giant Goliath!
You may feel unqualified, inadequate or insignificant. But God has never needed impressive people—He has always been looking for available people.
Be faithful. Be available. Live for Jesus. Speak of Jesus. Love the lost.
You never know what God may do through one simple conversation, one heartfelt prayer, or one ordinary believer who is simply willing to say, “Lord, use me.”
