The Sign Above the Shop
Before Jesus preached, He built things. Growing up in Nazareth, surrounded by farms, the carpenter’s most common job wasn’t tables or chairs — it was yokes, the wooden harness fitted onto oxen for plowing.
An ox would be brought in, measured, and a yoke roughed out of timber. Then it came back, again and again, to be tried on and adjusted, until it rested on the animal’s shoulders without chafing or rubbing raw. Tradition (and it’s just tradition) says a sign hung above Jesus’ shop in Nazareth: “My yokes fit.”
It leads to a thought. So when Jesus says, “Take My yoke upon you… for My yoke is easy” (Matthew 11:29-30), the word “easy” doesn’t mean effortless. It means well-fitting. Custom-made. Exactly right for you.
Here’s the picture worth holding onto: farmers often yoked a young, untrained ox next to an older, stronger one. The seasoned ox bore the weight of the plow; the young one simply learned to walk in step. That’s discipleship. Jesus doesn’t hand you a burden and step back. He steps in beside you and pulls.
The only time His yoke becomes unbearable is when we shove Him aside and try to bear the load ourselves — in our marriage, our parenting, our work, our own way.
You were never built to run your own life. You were built to walk beside the One who already knows exactly how the harness fits. Stop straining. Let Him lead.
