The Withered Hand and the Withered Heart
Matthew 12 presents two conditions within a single synagogue scene. A man’s hand was withered; Jesus spoke, and in the moment of obedience it was restored. The religious leaders’ hearts were withered; Jesus confronted them with truth, and they hardened themselves further, going out to plot His death (v 14).
The greater tragedy that day was not the paralysed hand but the closed heart. Jesus can restore a withered hand the instant someone responds to His command. He will not compel a heart that refuses to yield. The leaders’ opposition reached beyond the Sabbath rules themselves. It concerned authority. The One who healed claimed the authority of the Lord of the Sabbath, as the One who gives true rest. It was effectively a declaration of deity by Jesus! In response, the religious leaders sought to destroy Him. Ultimately, Jesus was already moving toward the cross, where the deeper withering of the human heart would be addressed.
Today, we stand before the same choice. Will we stretch out whatever feels impossible, trusting the Voice that commands? Or will we protect the hardened places and forfeit the restoration He offers? The power never lies in the stretching itself. It lies in the One who said, “Stretch out your hand.” Look to Him and respond to His Word.
