Buried Treasure and Costly Pearls

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Matthew 13:44–46

It’s tempting to read these two short parables as pictures of us pursuing God: stumbling on treasure, or searching for the perfect pearl, and giving up everything to have Him. But Romans 3:11 settles that: “there is none who seeks after God.” Nobody finds God by their own initiative. He is always the one who moves first.

So flip the picture. In God’s eyes, you are the treasure, buried and unnoticed. You are the pearl. And the merchant who sold everything he had — that’s Jesus, who “gave Himself for us” and purchased us “by His blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).

There was nothing intrinsically valuable about any of us apart from what He has done. He didn’t wait to see if we’d become worth pursuing. He looked at you, buried in the dirt, and decided you were worth everything He had, His very life.

That’s not a small thing to sit with. You were bought, deliberately, at the highest possible price! Praise the Lord for His mercy and grace!
