Daily devotion – He is our Comforter!
God Comforts Us
John 15:26
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me.”
The fact that Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Comforter is something we should never gloss over.
We all live in a stressful world that at times can seem overwhelming. There are moments when the pressures of life begin to crush us, and we can become a little wobbly in our ability to stand.
This is where the ministry of the Holy Spirit becomes so precious to us. When we are walking in the Spirit, we are conscious of God’s presence and His ability to help and comfort us in the midst of our struggles.
Romans 8:1 reminds us:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
Walking in the Spirit means living with the awareness that our life is in God’s hands all the time—and believing that it is.
So, when the pressures of life become heavy, we can know that God is with us and that He will comfort us when we need Him.
But how does the Holy Spirit comfort and encourage us?
Primarily, through the Word of God. The Holy Spirit brings to our remembrance the wonderful truths and promises God has given us. He helps us lift our eyes from what is pressing in upon us and fix them upon the One who is for us.
We also have the privilege of prayer. When we are weighed down, we can cry out to God, place our burdens into His hands, and ask Him to give us His rest.
The wonderful truth is that the Holy Spirit dwells within every believer. So why should we live as though we are orphans—alone, abandoned and without help?
There is no need for a troubled heart when the very Spirit of God dwells within you!
Romans 5:5 says:
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
Paul reminds us that the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
An orphan may feel unwanted, unloved and abandoned—but that is not the position of the child of God. We have a Father who loves us, a Saviour who has redeemed us, and the Holy Spirit who dwells within us to comfort and strengthen us.
Jesus said:
John 14:18
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”
What a wonderful promise!
When the world seems too heavy, remember: you are not alone. The Comforter has come. God is with you, His Word is available to you, and His love has been shed abroad in your heart.
Lift your eyes from the weight of what is around you and look to the God who is with you. He will comfort you.
