Limited Faith and the Invitation to Dependence

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

In the feeding of the five thousand the disciples saw only scarcity and began calculating human resources (Matthew 14:15–21). Five loaves and two fish looked like nothing against thousands of hungry people. Philip even estimated that two hundred days’ wages would not be enough to give each person even a little. Jesus’ response was disarmingly simple: “You give them something to eat.” Here, the disciples were confronted with their inadequacy.

We are meant to feel the inadequacy. Following Jesus does not automatically produce kingdom vision; many of us relate far more readily to the disciples than to the cynics of Nazareth or the morally compromised Herod.

Yet Jesus does not shame our smallness. He invites us to bring what little we have so that our desperation can become dependence. He involves the disciples in the miracle itself, not because He needs their help, but because He delights to work alongside those who trust Him. The result was abundance: everyone ate and was satisfied, and twelve baskets of leftovers remained. When Jesus is added, everything changes.

Our sense of inadequacy is not meant to paralyse us; it is meant to drive us to Him. Hudson Taylor captured the principle well: “When we do God’s work God’s way, we get God’s results.” Trust Christ for power, not your own strength, but the Spirit’s. Bring the little you have. He still multiplies whatever is placed in His hands.
