What Kind of Soil Is Your Heart?
Jesus had a simple question for the crowd gathered around Him: What happens when the Word of God meets your heart?
In Matthew 13, Jesus tells the story of a farmer scattering seed. The seed falls on four different kinds of ground. Some lands on the hard path. Some falls on rocky soil. Some grows among thorns. And some falls on good soil and produces an abundant harvest.
The remarkable thing is that the seed never changes. The seed is the Word of God. It is living and powerful. The sower scatters it generously.
What changes is the soil.
And that brings the parable uncomfortably close to home. We can hear the Bible week after week and remain unchanged. We can become excited about Jesus for a season, only to discover that our roots aren’t deep when difficulty comes. We can genuinely receive God’s Word while allowing worry, money, ambition, busyness, or comfort to slowly crowd it out.
But Jesus also speaks of good soil — a heart that hears, understands, receives, and bears fruit.
So perhaps the most important question isn’t, “How much Bible do I hear?” It is, “What happens when I hear it?”
The Word of God is still being scattered today. The question is not whether God is speaking. The question is whether we are listening.
Take a few moments today and ask the Lord honestly:
“Jesus, what kind of soil is my heart?”
