When Leaven Gets In
Matthew 13:33
One verse, and one of the most misread parables in the chapter. People hear “leaven” and picture something gentle, the kingdom spreading quietly through the world like yeast through dough. But everywhere else in Scripture, leaven pictures corruption, not blessing. It was banned from Jewish homes at Passover. Jesus used it to describe hypocrisy. Paul used it to describe sin moving through a church.
And here’s the nature of leaven worth remembering: it never stays confined to one corner. Introduce it, and it works through the whole batch until nothing is left untouched.
If the mustard seed pictures corruption from the outside, structures and influence, leaven pictures corruption from the inside: false doctrine quietly eroding a church’s core convictions. Denying Scripture’s reliability. Denying who Jesus is. Denying the resurrection, or grace through faith alone. None of it happens overnight. It’s one small compromise at a time, until the whole loaf has changed.
Know your Bible well enough to recognise the leaven before it spreads.
