The Birds in the Branches
Matthew 13:31–32
The mustard seed parable sounds, at first hearing, like good news: something tiny growing into something enormous. But look closer. A mustard seed doesn’t naturally become a tree, it becomes a bush. Jesus is describing abnormal overgrowth, not health. And birds nest in its branches. When accounting for expositional constancy, birds that, earlier in this very chapter, Jesus identified as the “wicked one” snatching away the word (13:4, 19).
That’s the picture: the visible church growing large, powerful, and institutional, far beyond what it was meant to be, and along the way, becoming a shelter for things that were never supposed to find a home there.
It’s not hard to spot today. Influence and size are no guarantee of health. A ministry, a movement, even a church can swell outwardly while quietly making room in its branches for compromise it should never have tolerated.
Bigger isn’t automatically better. Ask instead whether what’s growing is genuinely rooted in the truth, or just impressively large.
