Clean Hands, Pure Heart

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

Read: Matthew 15:1–28; Psalm 24:3–4

The Pharisees built a fence to guard the law, and it hardened into a cage. They discovered a loophole to appear holy, and it became a mask. They scrubbed their hands spotless while their hearts drifted far from God. With a severity that was nonetheless kind, Jesus told them that the problem lay not out there but in here (the heart), and that He had come to heal it.

Psalm 24 asks who may stand in God’s holy place, and answers that it is the one with clean hands and a pure heart. Only one person in all of history has ever met that standard. Jesus lived the life we could not live and died the death we deserved, then rose again so that the guilty, the masked, the weary performers, and the outsiders could be washed by God Himself and given a new heart.

If you have never trusted Christ, understand that Christianity is not a better set of rules, nor a matter of straightening yourself out before approaching God. It is coming to Jesus with empty hands and saying, “Lord, help me.” And if you are a believer who has been coasting behind a Sunday smile, hear the same invitation. Come to Him in humble repentance. He is not angry with you. He is near, and He deals tenderly with the humble of heart.

Pray: Father, give us the new heart You have promised, and make us a people who come with empty hands and leave with full ones.
