Holy Communion — Remember!

“This do in remembrance of me.” — Luke 22:19

This Sunday, we gather around the Lord’s Table for the sacrament of Holy Communion. It is a special time for those who have been saved to give thanks and remember our Lord’s great love for us and the sacrifice He willingly made on our behalf.

As we take the bread, we remember Christ’s body, given for us. As we take the cup, we remember His shed blood, His suffering, and His death upon the cross.

Jesus wants us to remember His death because He wants us to remember how He died and, more importantly, why He died! Why? Because everything we have as Christians centres upon His death and resurrection.

It is not simply the life our Lord lived or the teachings He gave that save sinners. But it is through His sacrificial death upon the cross that our salvation has been made possible. He died in our place, paying the price for our sin.

Therefore, as we gather around the Lord’s Table, we remember why He died.

Christ died for our sins. He was our substitute!

Isaiah 53:6 reminds us:

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

What a wonderful truth! We had all gone astray, each following our own way, yet the Lord laid upon His Son the iniquity of us all. Jesus took upon Himself the punishment we deserved. He paid the debt that we could never pay!

We should also remember how He died.

He went willingly to the cross, meekly submitting Himself to the Father’s will and demonstrating the immeasurable love He has for us.

Romans 5:8 declares:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

What love! Christ did not wait for us to become good enough, nor did He wait for us to deserve His mercy. He loved us while we were still sinners, and He demonstrated that love by giving His life for us.

He willingly gave His body into the hands of wicked men and bore the burden of our sins upon the cross. The sinless Son of God suffered and died so that we, through faith in Him, might receive forgiveness and everlasting life.

As we gather this Sunday around the Lord’s Table, may we come with grateful hearts, remembering all that Jesus has done for us. Let us never allow the bread and the cup to become merely familiar symbols or an empty religious routine. They remind us of the greatest demonstration of love this world has ever known!

We have so much to give thanks for and so much to remember. Our salvation has been purchased at an immeasurable cost, and we must never forget the One who paid that price.

Jesus truly is our Good Shepherd, the One who laid down His life for the sheep (John 10:11). What a wonderful assurance to know that we belong to Him!

As we remember His sacrifice, may our hearts be filled afresh with gratitude, love, and peace — a peace that this world cannot give or take away.

This Sunday, as we gather around the Lord’s Table, let us remember Him!
