Daily devotion – Jesus is ALL I need!
Those who foolishly state that Jesus Is Not Enough!
There is a growing spiritual movement today, even among many who attend church, that seeks to add something—or someone—to the finished work of Christ.
A few years ago, the head of one of the main traditional churches here in Western Australia stated publicly in that church’s main publication that Christianity does not hold all truth, and that Christians can learn from other religions such as Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. When I read those words, I was taken back, to say the least.
The question we must ask is simple: Is Jesus enough?
The Apostle Paul warned Timothy that in the last days there would be those who were continually seeking knowledge, yet never arriving at the truth:
“Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
— 2 Timothy 3:7
Paul was even more forceful when writing to the Galatians. He warned against anyone adding to or changing the Gospel of Jesus Christ:
“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
— Galatians 1:8
And then, so there could be no misunderstanding, Paul repeated the warning:
“As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
— Galatians 1:9
The Apostle John likewise gave a solemn warning against adding to God’s revealed Word:
“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.”
— Revelation 22:18
We must be very careful when people suggest that Jesus is not enough, that His Gospel needs something added to it, or that salvation can be found through other religious paths.
Jesus is enough!
It was Jesus Christ who came from heaven. It was Jesus who lived the sinless life we could never live. It was Jesus who suffered and died upon the cross for our sins. It was Jesus who was buried, and it was Jesus who rose again three days later in victory over death.
Paul did not do that. John did not do that. No religious leader, prophet or teacher has done that—and therefore neither Paul, John nor any faithful believer should ever add another gospel to the one Christ has given us.
Paul later wrote to Timothy:
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5
And as we close, we will let Jesus Himself have the final word:
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
— John 14:6
There is no need to add another way.
Jesus is the Way.
Jesus is the Truth.
Jesus is the Life.
And Jesus is enough.
