Don’t Keep the Bread to Yourself
Scripture: Matthew 15:36–37; Matthew 28:19–20
There’s a small detail in Matthew’s account of the feeding of the four thousand that deserves our attention. Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples. Then the disciples gave it to the crowd.
Jesus could have performed the miracle without involving them. Instead, He chose to put the bread into their hands and send them among the hungry people. The provision came from Jesus, but the disciples were given the privilege of distributing it.
That’s a picture of Christian service. We cannot save anyone, change a heart, or manufacture spiritual life. Only God can do that. But He has graciously chosen to work through ordinary people who carry His truth into the lives of others.
The disciples had to move beyond their familiar circle and take the bread to people who were different from them. In time, Jesus would command them to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20). The hillside was preparing them for a much larger mission.
The same principle applies to us.
We have received mercy, forgiveness, hope, and the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ. We haven’t been given these gifts merely to enjoy them privately. We’re called to share the good news.
What might that look like this week? Perhaps inviting someone to church. Perhaps opening your home for a meal, meeting a neighbour for coffee, or listening patiently to a friend who is struggling. Perhaps it means praying consistently for someone who doesn’t yet know Christ and looking for an opportunity to speak about Him.
You don’t have to do everything. Start with one person. Pray for them. Look for them. Love them. And when the opportunity comes, share the bread.
Jesus has not run out of provision. His invitation is still going out, and He still uses ordinary hands to carry extraordinary news.
Reflect: Who is one person you can pray for and intentionally serve this week?
Pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for the grace You have given me. Help me stop keeping it to myself. Put someone on my heart, and give me the love and courage to share Your good news. Amen.
