He Holds Both the Storm and You

Read: Hebrews 7:25; Isaiah 30:18-21; Romans 8:18

While the disciples strained at the oars, Jesus was on the mountain praying. He never lost sight of them. That is the picture Hebrews gives us of the risen Christ, who “always lives to make intercession” for those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25). When the winds are loud and heaven seems silent, He is not absent. He is enthroned, watching, and interceding, and He holds both the storm and His people in His sovereign hands.

Isaiah offers tender assurance for those in a long season of trial: “The Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you… Blessed are all those who wait for Him” (Isaiah 30:18). Even when the Lord has allowed hardship, He promises to teach us, and He promises a voice behind us saying, “This is the way, walk in it.” Notice how our questions can change. Peter went from “Lord, don’t You care?” to “Lord, if it is You, command me to come.” We can move from “Where are You?” to “What good are You doing here?”

For the disciples, the story ended on the far shore. Ours may not resolve so quickly, but this world is not the end. Beyond this life on earth, there is ‘another shore’. Paul reminds us that our present sufferings are “not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

Take courage today. The One who is sovereign over the storm will bring you home.
