Search the Scriptures: Where We’ve Been in Matthew
Last Sunday we marked a turning point. In Matthew 16:21, “From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things… and be killed, and be raised the third day.” The whole Gospel now leans toward the cross and the empty tomb.
Before we walk further, it’s worth pausing to look back. Where have we been? From the genealogy and the manger, through the Sermon on the Mount, the miracles, the parables of the Kingdom, and the growing opposition, Matthew has been building a case: Jesus is the promised King, the Messiah of Israel, the One who fulfills the Scriptures.
Paul urged Timothy, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). He also warned that in the last days scoffers would come and people would turn away from sound doctrine. The remedy for a drifting heart is a Word-filled mind.
The Bereans model this beautifully. They “were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). They didn’t just listen. They examined.
