When Rest Becomes a Burden

Pastor Israel Carmody   -

“Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Imagine being offered a gift of rest and somehow turning it into another burden.

That is what had happened with the Sabbath in Jesus’ day. God had given Israel the Sabbath as a gift. It was designed to create space to stop, remember, worship, and enjoy God’s provision. But over time, the religious leaders had surrounded that simple command with layer upon layer of regulations.

Instead of rest, there was anxiety.
Instead of freedom, fear.
Instead of delight, regulations.

The Sabbath had become a burden.

And if we’re honest, Christians can do the same thing. We can take the freedom of following Jesus and turn it into a performance. We begin asking, “Have I done enough? Have I prayed enough? Read enough? Served enough? Been good enough? Have I earned God’s favour and blessing?”

Before long, our relationship with God feels less like walking with a loving Father and more like trying to pass a religious examination.

But Jesus didn’t come to give us another list of rules to keep. He came to give us Himself.

The question we need to consider out of Matthew 12 is not merely, “What day should I rest?” It is, “Where is true rest found?”

The answer is standing in the grain-field. The King of the Sabbath has come. And His invitation still stands: Come to Me.

Lay down the performance. Lay down the pressure. Lay down the burden of trying to earn what Christ freely gives.

The King of Rest is inviting you to stop.
