Breaking Free from Worry

How do we break free from worry and the many things that continually trouble us? How do we experience the peace of God that the Bible tells us belongs to us as believers?

Sometimes life can feel as though we are bouncing from one mishap to another, like the steel ball in a pinball machine—constantly being buffeted from one thing to the next.

But in those moments, we have a choice to make.

Once again, we go to God’s Word, and once again we discover the answer, the medicine and the cure for the ailments that this world and sin continually try to place upon us.

Jesus gives us this wonderful instruction in Matthew 6:

Matthew 6:25–27 — “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life… Look at the birds of the air… your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”

Jesus then points us to the lilies of the field and reminds us that if God cares for them, how much more will He care for His children?

Then comes the key:

Matthew 6:33 — “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

And Jesus concludes:

Matthew 6:34 — “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

Jesus tells us plainly: make the decision to trust God.

That does not mean our problems suddenly disappear. It means that when the problems come, we don’t have to carry them alone.

We talk to the Lord—that is prayer. We cast our cares upon Him, trusting that He knows what we need, that He is able to guide us, protect us and provide for us.

Then we can step back and say, “Lord, You are in control. You are leading my life. You are meeting my needs. Now help me to enjoy You and all that You have given me as Your child.”

How often we allow the small and seemingly insignificant things of life to steal the joy that should come from walking with and serving the Lord each day.

Worry cannot add anything to our lives, but faith can change the way we live them.

Matthew 19:26 — “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

So today, make the choice to trust Him. Give Him your worries, seek His kingdom first, and refuse to allow tomorrow’s troubles to rob you of today’s blessings.

With Jesus, we can live the abundant life He desires for us—not because life is always easy, but because He is always with us.
