Of How Much More Value Is a Man Than a Sheep?
When the Pharisees attempted to ensnare Jesus with a question about the Sabbath, He answered with a question of His own. “If one of you has a sheep that falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep!” (Matthew 12:11-12) The logic was already accepted among them; acts of mercy toward animals were permitted. Jesus simply pressed that logic to its proper conclusion.
The Sabbath had never been intended to restrict compassion. It was itself an expression of divine mercy, a gift set apart for rest and restoration. What day could be more fitting for the relief of suffering than the day God had marked as a blessing for His people?
Beneath the surface lies a deeper affirmation rooted in creation itself. Every person bears the image of God (Gen 1:27). Worth is not assigned by productivity or usefulness; it is given at the beginning. A man matters infinitely more than a sheep. Religion had inverted the order of values; Jesus restored it, broadening the principle so that doing good on the Sabbath stood not as an exception but as the natural outworking of the day’s true purpose.
The same inversion can still take hold among us, when systems, preferences, or personal comfort quietly rise above the dignity of people. Jesus refuses that exchange. His question continues to confront every tendency that would place rules above mercy.
